The reason for the online job applications is so that the company can begin their first step of eliminating their candidates, so it’s important that you know how to fill out these applications properly in order not to be one of the many that get screened out. The basic rules for filling these out are pretty much the same as a regular application with a few minor differences.
Make sure that when you start to fill out the application that you have all of your information about yourself right there with you, this should include all of your work and education history and make sure that your resume is ready to use as well. This will help you to answer the questions easier and quicker. You will also need your Social Security number and you may have to have your drivers license as well.
It’s important that you read all of their instructions very carefully before you even begin. A lot of the employers will give specific directions that must be followed or your application will be rejected. So pay close attention to any special instructions there might be.
You should also see if the application will allow you to sit down and do the process in a variety of stages. You want to know this before you start. You don’t want to start the application then have to stop for some reason only to come back to find out that you have to start all over from the beginning when you get back. Even if they ask you the question your best answer to give would be to say “this is open for discussion” or “salary is negotiable”. This is a ploy in which employers weed out applicants by asking them the salary they want. However; if they have rigged the application making that a required answer then you will have to answer it. So then you should give a pay range and not a specific single amount.
When they ask for what position you are looking for make sure you reply with a more general career range. For instance type in “general office work” instead of “administrative assistant”. The reason is that titles are going to limit the possibilities of jobs and the broader the work title the better chance you have at getting a job. Just as long as your skills match the broader range you could fit a variety of different available jobs.
Be careful how you answer your questions, especially about anything criminal. They can only ask you if you have been convicted of a serious crime and nothing more and if you have only been arrested and not convicted then always, no matter what say “no”.
Understand that by submitting an online application that some employers are also being made aware of your computer skills as well and this will be passed on as part of the information on your application. So make sure that you fill out the application as perfectly as possible.
