The foremost important thing to remember when looking at baby cribs is that they need to be new. You really need to buy a new crib unless it is one that was made after June 18, 2011. Anything older than that does not have a guarantee that it will meet the now current federal safety standards that were put into place on that specific date.

When looking at baby cribs you need to make sure that they are JPMA certified also known as the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association. They provide a certification program that ensures that the crib you buy does meet and exceed the safety regulations.

You also need to check out the Consumer Product Safety Commissions website to see if any of the baby cribs you might be interested in have been recalled for any reason. Be sure to carefully read this information to make sure the crib you might want to buy has not been recalled at any time.

You also want to make sure the crib is very sturdy. It shouldn’t wobble when you shake it and they need to be sanded well and have no cracks or splinters. Even though a lot of baby cribs do not come with mattress make sure that the one you do get has no more than a couple of fingers amount of space that is between the side of the crib and the mattress.

Before you go out and buy a baby crib make sure you have all the information that you will need. You need to know just how much space you have for the crib in the nursery. This way you will know if you can buy a full size standard crib or will need to buy a more compact model instead.

It is also a good thing to know if the room is going to have carpet or not. This way you will know whether you should buy a crib that has wheels or one that doesn’t. If you do buy one that has wheels you need to make sure that there is a good locking system on the crib so the baby, when older can’t scoot the crib across the nursery floor when they are standing.

If you happen to want to move the crib from room to room then you should make sure that you measure all the doorways that you might want to get the crib through. Mini cribs there won’t be any problem with but full size cribs are the ones you need to be concerned about. Always make sure however, that you put the crib together in the room in which your baby will be sleeping in.

If you are considering having the bed grow with your child then you will need to find one that can convert from a crib to a daybed, toddler bed or even into a full size bed. You will have to pay a much higher price for this kind of a crib but it could be a lot easier on you than having to buy a different size bed each time your child outgrows a previous one.

When you go out and buy a crib, you don’t have to break the bank on it. There are some perfectly good and safe cribs that are under $100 and others can cost you thousands. It is not just the crib that will cost you, since most don’t have mattresses, there’s the cost for that and then there is the bedding and conversion kit if you are looking to keep the crib through the growth of your child, all of which will increase the cost. It is all up to you and what you can afford.

Just remember, if the crib passes the federal safety regulations, it doesn’t matter whether it costs very little or a fortune, safe is safe and cost has nothing to do with it.
